Austria in the 2016 UEFA European Championship (Euro 2016) was an interesting case. The tournament, held in France, saw Austria placed in Group F alongside Hungary, Iceland, and Portugal.

Austria entered the tournament with high expectations but struggled to perform. They finished third in their group, failing to advance past the group stage. Here’s a quick summary of their matches:

  1. Austria 0-2 Hungary (June 14, 2016) – Austria lost their opening game to Hungary, with goals from Zoltán Gera and Ádám Szalai.

  2. Austria 1-2 Iceland (June 22, 2016) – Austria lost their second match to Iceland, with a late goal from Arnór Ingvi Traustason sealing the victory for Iceland. Austria's goal was scored by Alessandro Schöpf.

  3. Austria 0-0 Portugal (June 22, 2016) – In their final group match, Austria drew with Portugal. Despite Portugal’s star player, Cristiano Ronaldo, missing a penalty in this game, Austria couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity.

The team's performance was disappointing considering their strong squad and high hopes leading into the tournament.

Austria's squad for Euro 2016 featured several notable players, including:

  1. David Alaba – One of the team's standout players, Alaba was a versatile and key figure in the squad. Playing primarily as a left-back or central midfielder, he was known for his dynamic play and technical skills. At the time, he was with Bayern Munich and was one of the most highly regarded Austrian players.

  2. Marc Janko – A tall and experienced striker, Janko was an important attacking option for Austria. Known for his heading ability and physical presence, he played for FC Basel during the tournament.

  3. Christian Fuchs – A solid left-back who was an integral part of Austria’s defense. At the time, he was playing for Leicester City, where he was a key member of the squad that would famously win the Premier League title in the 2015-16 season.
