During the 2009–10 season, Olympiacos faced a challenging period across various competitions:
Super League Greece:
- The team finished 2nd in the regular season but struggled in the play-offs, ultimately securing 5th place—their lowest league finish in recent seasons.
Greek Cup:
- Olympiacos was eliminated in the fourth round, marking an early exit from the tournament.
UEFA Champions League:
- The club advanced to the Round of 16 but was eliminated by French side Bordeaux, losing both legs for a 3–1 aggregate score.
Throughout the season, Olympiacos experienced managerial instability:
- Temuri Ketsbaia started as manager but was replaced by Zico in November 2009.
- Zico's tenure lasted until March 2010, after which Božidar Bandović took over.
This season also marked the end of an era, as long-time chairman Sokratis Kokkalis stepped down after two decades at the helm.
Key Players:
- Antonis Nikopolidis (GK) – The experienced Greek goalkeeper and captain, providing leadership and stability at the back.
- Olof Mellberg (CB) – A rock in defense, the Swedish center-back brought experience and toughness to the backline.
- Luciano Galletti (Winger) – One of the most technically gifted players in the squad, offering creativity and attacking threat until his unfortunate mid-season retirement due to health issues.
- Kostas Mitroglou (FW) – The young Greek striker had a breakout season, scoring crucial goals and showing great promise.
- Diogo (FW) – The Brazilian forward was a key attacking figure, known for his dribbling skills and finishing ability.
